Symptoms of Vein Problems
Vein problems can affect both men and women at any age; however, women tend to experience vein abnormalities more frequently due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause.
When you suffer from vein problems, you may experience a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms and side effects such as:
- Itching, aching, or burning in one or both legs
- A sensation of "heaviness" throughout the lower limbs
- Restless leg syndrome
- Difficulty sleeping due to throbbing or tingling in legs
- Discomfort while walking, standing, or running
- Swelling (especially around the ankles)
You may also feel self-conscious due to the appearance of bulging, inflamed or broken veins - those with visible vein abnormalities often attempt to hide their spider and varicose veins by wearing long pants or avoiding bathing suits, shorts, and skirts.
Minimally-Invasive Treatment of Vein Abnormalities
Our team of experienced, compassionate plastic surgeons at the NWH Center for Plastic Surgery use ground-breaking technologies and techniques to treat vein problems. Our minimally-invasive vein treatments are designed to help you look and feel your best.
Varicose Vein Treatments
Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged, rope-like veins that usually occur on your legs, feet and ankles. They may appear to be dark blue or purple, especially if you have light-colored skin. Pregnancy, obesity, family history, and age all increase your risk of developing varicose veins, as does standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
Although varicose veins rarely cause serious medical complications, they can be unsightly and leave you feeling self-conscious about your appearance. Our plastic surgery team treats varicose veins and other vein abnormalities using non-surgical, non-invasive techniques designed to help you look and feel your best.
Spider Vein Treatments
Telangiectasia, or spider veins, can develop if blood backs up in your veins. This causes your veins to swell up and become weak, leading to the appearance of web-like patches of dilated veins just below the surface of your skin.
Hereditary, hormonal changes, sun exposure, aging, and standing or sitting for long periods can all lead to spider veins, as can pregnancy and obesity.
Spider veins are usually harmless; however, they can make you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable wearing certain types of clothing, particularly if you have fair skin. Our spider vein treatments are performed on an outpatient basis, and in most cases, appearance of spider veins can be successfully eliminated within four to six weeks.
Here at NWH, we're treating vein problems like spider veins and varicose veins with a variety of ground-breaking techniques, including sclerotherapy.
During this non-invasive, non-surgical treatment, we inject a specialized chemical solution directly into the affected veins through a tiny surgical catheter. This chemical causes the damaged veins to become irritated and swell up, blocking blood flow to the affected vein. Over time, the treated veins will transform into scar tissue and disappear.
Your sclerotherapy treatment will take less than an hour to complete, and only a light, local anesthetic is needed. You will lay on your back on a treatment table, with your legs slightly elevated. Your plastic surgeon then inserts a tiny catheter into a vein, and guides the catheter towards the treatment site with the help of a high-definition ultrasound.
Once the injections are completed, you may be fitted with specialized compression stockings to help prevent blood from returning to the treated veins. If you have vein abnormalities over a wide area, you may need multiple treatments to achieve your desired results.
Generally speaking, you can expect to return to your normal activities within a day of your sclerotherapy treatment. Final results from sclerotherapy treatments can take anywhere from three weeks to three months to develop, and during your recovery, you may notice slight discoloration of the skin around the injection site.
